The realm of art and of aesthetics may seem a world away from that of global politics. The study of aesthetics is the study of taste and beauty and how together they awaken in us a certain affective sensibility. In short: a rather effeminate realm. Global politics, by contrast, is dominated by hard power and masculine military might. The men in charge wage ‘dispassionate debates’ and speak in a rational strategic language that banishes emotion to the realm of weakness and irrationality (Cohn 1987: 688).
