Why should we care about ‘citizenship’ in IR? Like democratization, a focus on nationality and citizenship illustrates inclusions and exclusions within society that become replicated on the international level. Although matters of nationality and citizenship laws are left to sovereign states, in our globalized world, where people are highly mobile, domestic citizenship laws have international implications, particularly where rights are concerned. Both men and women are affected by unequal citizenship and nationality laws, and feminists have interrogated the problem of unequal citizenship in a variety of ways. Here, we discuss feminist interrogations of the concept of citizenship, nationality and citizenship, gender and international law, and the ‘myth’ of protection and the state.
