ABSTRACT
From its origins in the works of Johan Galtung (1975; see also Galtung 1969) the concept and practices of peacebuilding have been distinguished from peacemaking and peacekeeping, both operationally (see Brahmini et al. 2000; Panyarachun et al. 2004; United Nations 1996) and in scholarly literature (see Denskus 2007; Doyle and Sambanis 2000; Gawerc 2006). Although clearly and inextricably related to both peacemaking and peacekeeping, peacebuilding activities have come to represent ‘the front line of preventative action’ (Doyle and Sambanis 2000: 779) through the production of stable political, social and economic institutions in the aftermath of war (see Figure 22.1 ).
